IVF Implantation Versus Infertility

by admin on March 6, 2010

In-vitro fertilization also known as IVF includes that of fertilizing the human egg cell in a lab and implanting the embryo or the fertilized egg inside the womb or uterus of a woman for having regular pregnancy and birth.Every now and then, an embryo that results from an in-vitro fertilization is frozen to be used later for IVF implantation.

In-vitro fertilization is a procedure to be followed by women who have problems in conception. The procedure is used to help conceive and have a normal period of pregnancy.  The procedure can also be used to prevent the transmission of hereditary diseases.Fertilization will not take place in the test tube but in a small container which is also known as perti dish.

Test tube baby is the popular name for the baby resulting from the in-vitro fertilization. There are some procedures you can follow to produce a test tube baby.First, the eggs have to be collected from the woman. But even before they are collected, the woman has to take some medicines to stimulate the ovulation process.  When the eggs are ripe, the surgeon performs an operation to remove them.

The next phase in IVF implantation includes the egg fertilization and development in the lab. After the egg's removal, it is brought to the lab where it's placed in the laboratory, where it is soaked in the special fluid for around 6 hours. Then the partner or a sperm donor supplies the sperm specimen.  This must take place about four hours after the eggs have collected. The sperm must have special washing and incubation. They are then mixed with the eggs and left for around 18 hours.  Following this procedure, the eggs are reexamined to see if fertilization has occurred.  They are then returned to culture for another twenty four hours.

Following the fertilization procedure, the grown fertilized egg will be transferred to the woman’s uterus. To minimize the risk of many pregnancies, only a few eggs are given to the woman.

Embryos are not implanted by the doctor. They are transferred to the uterus, and if you are very, very lucky the embryos do their job and implant on their own.

I know this may seem like nitpicking, but the use of the word ‘implant’ gives people the idea that IVF has a much higher success rate than it does. The overall success rate is only at about 27% per cycle.
